Older printing techniques meant that the ink remained wet on the wedding invitation. Therefore to avoid ink transfer and smudges a sheet of tissue was placed in between the invitations.

Modern printers do not have this problem, however, some people still like to place tissue paper on the wedding invitations. This is more a formality and is not due to etiquette.
